Blessing Of Candles On The Feast Of Saint Blaise

V. Our help is in the name of the Lord.
R. Who has made heaven and earth.

V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with your spirit.

Let us pray

Almighty and most loving God,
by Your Word alone You have created
all the great variety of things in the world.
You have also wished that the same Word
by whom all things are created
should become man to make men once again like God.
You are great and measureless,
awe-inspiring and worthy of praise,
and You do marvelous things.
The glorious Martyr and Bishop Blaise,
for his confession of faith in You,
did not fear to suffer different kinds of tortures,
and happily won the palm of martyrdom.
You granted him, among other graces, this privilege,
that he might by Your power cure any illness of the throat.
We humbly beg of Your majesty that,
not considering our offenses,
but rather his merits and prayers, You would,
in Your wonderful goodness,
be so kind as to bless and make holy these candles which You have made,
and pour Your grace upon them.
Grant that all who shall in lively faith
have their throats touched with them
may by his suffering and merits be freed from every illness of the throat.
May they, healthy and happy,
return thanks to You in Your Church
and praise Your glorious name,
which is blessed for ever and ever,
through our Lord, Jesus Christ,
Your Son, who lives and is King and God with You
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
for ever and ever.

R. Amen.

(And they are sprinkled with holy water. Then the priest takes two candles fitted into the form of a cross, and applies them to the throat under the chin of each person to be blessed [they meanwhile kneeling before the altar] and he says:)
